(Nathan Marhold, 25, student Erasmus MC)

“You could have been a doctor already”, people sometimes say to me. Hearing that hurts a bit, but it simply wasn’t the right time for me when I started studying medicine in 2009. I wanted to become a surgeon because the combination of abstract science with a very practical approach appealed to me. But it didn’t last long, though, ‘cause I missed classes all the time. Too busy with other things – most of all with myself. It makes me feel insecure sometimes when I compare myself to my peers but I just needed that time for myself. I’ve worked all over the place and travelled to every continent. And now I’m much more at base with myself, being able to focus and prioritise and – not unimportantly – I have learned to plan! Of course I have to get used to being back in the classroom and my fellow students are quite a bit younger than me. But so far so good. Hopefully it will work out now. I’m going to give it my very best shot!”
