Lysian Martina (28, student Accounting & Assurance)
“I’m from Willemstad, Curacao. My parents are uneducated. They’ve worked really hard all their lives to give our family all opportunities. I used to say: ‘When I grow up, I want to work in an office with normal hours and airconditioning’. So 10 years ago I came to Rotterdam to study. I thought I’d be back by now, but I keep adding studies to it.
Before I left for the Netherlands, two days after my birthday, my grandmother died. She still is my most important role model. Uneducated but very wise. ‘Accept people like they are, Lysian, and be discreet’, she taught me. She was kind to all people and there was a place for everyone in her heart and house. She knew everything about everybody but she would never speak badly about a person. I try to live like her. Most of the time I manage.”
