“I have a huge passion for music! During my studies, I was a member of the Rotterdam Student Society. The Hermes House Band regularly performed here. When the bass player left the band, I was asked to take his place. I didn’t think twice! It was a fantastic, but busy time; rehearsals, performances, we recorded our first CD and in between I had to study. Eventually I graduated in Legal aspects of using music on the Internet and copyright.
Since 1994, I’ve been running Xplo (together with Mark Snijder) which started as a record company. Since 1998, we’ve also been organising events through Xplo Events. Tiesto op de Maas (100,000 people!) is a project that makes me very proud, but Hermes House Band in concert with Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in De Doelen was massive. After that show, the concertmaster said: ‘I’ve worked here for 25 years, but I’ve never seen anything like this!’
I love learning and as a result we do a lot ourselves. There are six of us here working on some amazing projects. We have no ambition to become millionaires or employ a hundred people. Ultimately it’s important that you do what you enjoy and that you aren’t led by other people’s expectations of you. Incidentally, my studies in law sometimes come in useful. The changing music world abounds in licences and contracts!”
