(John Sinjorgo, 54, Head Facilities Service Desk at Institute of Social Studies)

We’re on the roof of ISS. Behind me you can see the Peace Palace. Let me tell you a nice story about that. I was born in Australia, near Adelaide. My father was originally from The Hague and he would always proudly tell me about the wonderful Peace Palace. My parents didn’t think they’d move back to the Netherlands, but when my father lost his job we had to return. I was seventeen and thought it was just one big European adventure. Finally I saw the palace in real life!

In 1978 I started working for ISS. Previously, the central administration of the PTT was housed in this building. And it just so happens that my wife’s grandfather had a bakery just around the corner. As it was the director of PTT’s birthday, he treated all the staff to cake which he ordered from the bakery. My wife helped fold cake boxes there as a little girl.”
