(Abera) Demessie (45, catering employee Woudestein)
“Write something about me? I am just a regular guy, born in Ethiopia and when I was 18 I came to the Netherlands. I’ve been working at Erasmus University for thirteen years now. Thirteen years, can you believe it? I started out as a truck driver and now I am working in catering. In 13 years I got to know everyone! You know, I’m happy here, at Woudestein. It feels like home. Every morning I start work at 6.30, open my shop and bake bread. When students enter the shop I say: ‘Look, here are my children.’ I really say that, just ask my colleague. Even if another employer paid me 1000 euro extra each month, I still wouldn’t leave this place. Feeling good at what you do is more important than making money. Would you like a coffee? And a cake to go with it?”
